Yes — solar panels do work on cloudy Tasmanian days. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so they keep producing power even under grey skies. Output drops when it’s overcast — sometimes a lot — but it rarely falls to zero. And because what really matters is your total generation across the year, Tasmania’s long summer days do a lot of heavy lifting. Here’s what cloudy weather actually means for solar in Tasmania, and how to make it work for your household.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Yes. Solar panels respond to light, not heat, so they still generate from the diffused daylight that filters through cloud cover. On a heavily overcast day a system produces only a fraction of its clear-sky output, but across a month of mixed Tassie weather those grey-day contributions genuinely add up.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cool temperatures actually help — panels run more efficiently when cool, which suits Tasmania’s climate.
- Rainy weeks wash dust and salt off your panels, which is a small free clean.
- Shade from trees or neighbouring roofs hurts output far more than cloud does, so a clear roof matters more than a blue sky.
Is Tasmania sunny enough for solar?
Yes — Tasmania receives enough usable daylight across the year for solar to make solid sense for most homes, even if mainland conditions are better known. Summer is the star: long days around the solstice mean generation stretches from early morning well into the evening.
Winter is the weaker season, with shorter days and a lower sun. That’s normal everywhere in Australia — it just matters a little more down here. A well-designed system is sized with those lean winter months in mind, not just the summer peaks, so you’re not caught out when daylight is shortest.
What size solar system do I need?
For most Tasmanian homes planning to electrify — an EV, heat pump hot water, induction cooking — a larger system around 13 kW of panels on a 10 kW inverter is the sensible, future-proof default. That’s a step up from the old 6.6 kW standard.
Why bigger makes sense now:
- The 133% oversizing rule lets you pair roughly 13 kW of panels with a 10 kW inverter.
- TasNetworks allows a 10 kW inverter on a standard single-phase connection, so most homes don’t need a costly three-phase upgrade.
- Extra panel capacity is relatively cheap at install time, and it covers future loads you haven’t bought yet.
One honest caveat: if your household uses very little power and you have no battery, EV or electrification plans, a smaller system may suit you better. Bigger isn’t automatically better if you’d simply export most of it.
Is it better to use my solar or sell it back to the grid?
Using your own solar is worth far more than exporting it. Aurora Energy’s regulated feed-in tariff is modest — 9.276 cents per kWh from 1 July 2026 — while the grid power you avoid buying costs roughly 28 to 30 cents per kWh. Self-consumption is where the savings are.

Practical ways to use more of your own solar:
- Run the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer in daylight hours.
- Set hot water or EV charging to soak up the midday sun.
- Heat or cool the house while the sun’s out, rather than after dark.
How long does solar take to pay for itself in Tasmania?
It depends on your household, but as a rough guide rather than a guarantee, many Tasmanian homes see the upfront cost of solar come back in the order of four to six years. It could be shorter or longer depending on how much of your own solar you use, your tariff and your install cost.
If you add a battery, the battery portion usually takes longer — somewhere in the seven-to-twelve-year range is a fair general guide, again depending on your usage and tariff. Anyone who quotes you an exact figure without seeing your bills is guessing.
What solar rebates can I get in Tasmania?
Two federal programs do most of the heavy lifting — the STC rebate for solar and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program for batteries — and both depend on meeting eligibility rules, so nothing here is automatic or guaranteed.
- The STC rebate (Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme). Tasmania sits in STC Zone 4. For eligible systems installed by accredited installers, this shaves a meaningful chunk off the upfront price as a point-of-sale discount — you’ll usually see it already applied in quotes.
- The Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Running from 1 July 2025, it takes around 30% off an eligible battery — in 2026, roughly $250 per usable kWh at the full rate for the first 14 kWh, then 60% of that rate for 14–28 kWh and 15% for 28–50 kWh, capped at 50 kWh. The discount tapers each year to 2030, and the battery must be paired with solar.
There is no separate Tasmanian state battery rebate. Settings change over time, so treat any figure as a snapshot and check the current rules before committing.
Is a home battery worth it in Tasmania?
Honestly, batteries pay back more slowly in Tasmania than on the mainland, because our power is relatively cheap and the feed-in tariff is fair. For a typical household on a standard Aurora tariff, a battery’s value is mainly extra self-consumption plus backup during outages.
There is no vendor or retailer VPP program operating in Tasmania. Wholesale spot-passthrough retail plans do exist, though, and automated battery control can charge when spot prices go negative and dodge peak-price imports — we run exactly this setup on our own systems, so we know it works. But it’s not the right fit for every home, and the numbers depend on your tariff and usage.
The bottom line for Tasmanian homes
Solar works in Tasmania — clouds and all. Panels produce from daylight, summer delivers long generating days, and the economics stack up best when you use your own power rather than export it. Size for the home you’re becoming, not just the home you are today.
